Within the Summer School "Russian Express” that was held in the period from August 21 till September 10, 2017, students from Germany, Italy, China and Switzerland followed the footsteps of the Decembrists and learned how the Russian Empire lived, what it fought and suffered for. Our great international team - 22 students (13 from which were supported by the DAAD committee) - has passed the "road of courage" from the Sennaya Square of luxury and bustling St. Petersburg, through the heart of the Urals - Ekaterinburg to the oldest city in Western Siberia, Tomsk, and got a unique tourist and educational experience.
19th century is an era of great European revolutions, secret societies, and whimsical political intrigues. And Russian Empire has not been bypassed by this revolutionary spirit which is reflected in its various opposition movements. The most famous and legendary one is the movement of, so-called, the Decembrists - aristocrats who opposed the reign of Tsar Alexander I, Napoleon winner. World-known Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin, was also involved in the movement of the Decembrists and he perpetuated these sad and heroic days in his most celebrated poems.
The history of noble and selfless struggle of the Decembrists and their confrontation with serfdom and autocracy has had a lasting influence on the formation of modern cultural and political image of Russia. Some of the Decembrists were executed, but most of them were sent into exile in Siberia. Their wives went after them in the snowy Siberian wilderness, and this feat has been imprinted in history as an example of remarkable fortitude and courage. The road to Siberia started from St. Petersburg, passed through Ekaterinburg, and finished in Tomsk.
