Russian Express: Future of Russian Cities
Nowadays cities are facing unprecedented demographic, environmental, economic, social and spatial challenges and absence of effective urban planning. The issues of urban development is under the control of the Organization of United Nations, represented by the program UN-Habitat which supports countries to implement the urban dimensions of the sustainable development agenda to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Known as the largest country in the world, Russia has one of the biggest number of cities and human settlements and struggles
on making those places cleaner, greener, safer and healthier. Kazan and Ekaterinburg develop the Smart cities projects and try to embrace the principles of urban development. These two cities will be experienced by participants during the program “Russian Express: Future of Russian Cities”.
Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan, one of the oldest and most developed cities of Russia. It is a land with a thousand-year history, full of natural resources and possessing a unique cultural heritage. The pearl of the city is the Kazan Kremlin that is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Moreover, Tatarstan is implementing a large-scale project to restore historical and cultural monuments and sacred places of the Republic.
Ekaterinburg is the fourth largest metropolis in Russia; it is also a city on the border of Europe and Asia. The unique character and diverse appearance of the Ural capital combine innovation and historical heritage. Ekaterinburg is the only Russian city that was recognized by UNESCO as one of the 12 ideal cities of the world. Participants will not only see the urban life of city, but also experience the lifestyle of the Siberian villages with its picturesque landscape and ecological life style.
In 2006 Kazan was holding World Habitat Day. Ekaterinburg organized World Cities Day 2019. Both cities Kazan and Ekaterinburg expand their international profile hosting the so-called mega-events, while struggling with inequality of center-suburbs development, disparity of local life, and ecological issues, followed by active protests of city inhabitants.
Summer School “Russia – between Europe and Asia” combines intensive Russian language courses, linguistic games and quests, Russian cartoons and animations, scientific lectures, cultural events, workshops and excursions. After a 3-week summer course, participants will celebrate their linguistic achievements in conquering Russian language, enjoying the unique experience by traveling to Kazan and Ekaterinburg to be exposed to the urban contexts of Russia through of nowadays.
While travelling, participants will dive into the heartwarming and special world of Russian long train journey, where we will have a great chance to practice Russian language with the most talkative Russian grandmother aka babushkas.
You will join 40-hours course in Russian language with professional, amicable, open and the most active teachers of Ural Federal University -- the very place that will become the cozy home of all participants, teachers, assistants through sharing knowledge and experiences within the frames of lectures, programs, worships, tea talks and events.
You will have a diversity of games and quests while learning Russian language within special spaces and places that will allow you to consolidate and effectively work out the materials and information that you will receive. For instance, one of the games will be the linguistic “Author's Quest” game in which participants show their knowledge of the Russian language and culture. Such interactive tasks will strengthen the linguistic potentials of participants in terms of their knowledge in Russian vocabulary, grammar, speaking, as well as history and culture.
Participants will be split into several groups according to their proficiency level, and will be studying in small groups: 4 -12 students for 4 - 6 academic hours per day. Participants will focus on the practical aspects of Russian language presented in the proper pronunciation, use of tricky Russian grammar, idioms and words for everyday life.
Winter School “Russian Express: Future of Russian Cities” combines intensive Russian language courses, games and quest courses, soviet cartoons and animations, scientific lectures, cultural events, workshops and excursion programs within the heart of exquisite Russian identity in Ekaterinburg and Kazan.

Excursions and activities:
In Ekaterinburg: participants will see the most famous sights of the city such as the Square of 1905, Lenin’s monuments, The Church-on-Blood, Boris Yeltsin Centre, Museum of Fine Arts, Ural Opera Ballet Theatre, Soviet Lifestyle Museum, as the participants will be able to cross the borders between Europe and Asia and enjoy the view of Ural mountains, forests, real Russian thermal springs.
In Kazan: we will see the most the famous Kazan Kremlin, Volga river, Suyumbike Tower, Kul Sharif Mosque, Temple of All Religions, Kazan Arena, Bauman Street, Kazan Family Centre, Ministry for Agriculture and Food, The Cathedral of Peter and Paul, Chak-Chak museum Annunciation Cathedral, Old Tatar Settlement and other places!
NOT included in the basic cost of the program: airplane tickets/train tickets to/from Russia; meals (lunches and dinners); visa costs; optional excursions; souvenirs.
It is perfect for everybody with any level of Russian language (A0-C2) and who are interested in Russian Language, Culture and Nature.
Participants will discover and uncover the Russian urban activities. They will be engaged in a dynamic student life that is full of classes, workshops, exciting extracurricular activities, which include visiting sightseeing, theaters, museums, concerts, and trips around the Ural region, Kazan and that is in addition to other events related to the Russian language and culture.
