Russian Express: Russian Woman - Russian Power
From the ancient times to the present day, a Woman in Russia has been holding the most significant roles in terms of influencing Russia’s social, political and economic realities. He main focus of the Winter School “Russian Fresh: Russian Woman – Russian Power” is an analysis of the role and position of a Russian woman, now and then, accompanied with travelling to Ekaterinburg and Saint Petersburg, and a deep dive into the realms of Russian language.
The school participants will look at the female images of Motherland, the most powerful female political leaders such as Empress Catherine the Great, under whose rule Russia thrived and became one of the Great powers of Europe. Catherine the Great was a daughter of a German Duke, who came to power after a palace coup to become the most powerful Empress of Russia. The times of her rule can be studied in Saint Petersburg. Catherine the Great established the first Russian Institution of higher education for girls - “Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens”. Ekaterinburg, named after Catherine, the wife of Peter the Great, is a place where the history of a plain women, a daughter of a Lithuanian peasant, turning into a queen, can be traced. During the Russian Revolution times, Russian women-activists were spreading the news of the revolution, enforced its laws, set-up political education and conducted literacy classes for the working-class and female peasants. During the Soviet times, women in the USSR were accorded equal rights with men in all spheres of economic, state, cultural, social, and political life. Russian women writers such as famous poets Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva, Zinaida Gippius etc shaped the contemporary Russian language. The place of a woman in the contemporary Russia society, its problems and perspectives, the feminist activism in Russia will be studied in a conversation with Russian female activists in a café of young feminists “Simone” in Saint Petersburg.
The Winter School “Russian Fresh: Russian Woman – Russian Power” combines and presents intensive Russian language courses, reading Russian poems, Russian games and quests, Russian Soviet cartoons and animations, lectures, cultural events, workshops on songs and folklore dances, experiencing Russian winter activities and excursion programs from the Eastern to Western cities of Russia, Ekaterinburg and Saint Petersburg. After the 3-week winter course, school participants will achieve a remarkable linguistic competence and performance in Russian as a foreign language, and obtain a rich and practical knowledge of position and roles of women in Russia.

Excursions and activities:
In Ekaterinburg participants will see the most famous sights of the city such as the Square of 1905, Lenin’s monuments, The Church-on-Blood, Boris Yeltsin Centre, Museum of Fine Arts, Ural Opera Ballet Theatre, Soviet Lifestyle Museum, as the participants will be able to cross the borders between Europe and Asia and enjoy the view of Ural mountains, forests, real Russian thermal springs.
In Saint Petersburg we will visit the most beautiful sights of the city such as St. Isaac's Cathedral, State Museum-Memorial, Kazan Cathedral, The Hermitage, The museum of Anna Akhamatova, The Russian Museum, Museum of Political History of Russia, whereas participants will experience the Small City of contemporary young hipsters “Etaji” and view it from above.
